How Club Events Work
We follow fairly standard tournament rules. As the start time draws near, the club director (or a delegate) will count the number of players and create a double-elimination bracket to accomodate them. Positions in the opening bracket are drawn at random (usually with playing cards), and if necessary (depending on number of players), one or more players will draw an opening round bye. If a new player arrives after the start of the tournament and there is a bye slot available, he or she may fill it. If no late new players arrive, players who drew byes advance to the next round automatically.
The stake to enter each tournament is $10. At the end, 65% of the pool is awarded to the winner, and 35% goes to the runner-up (this prize can be split if time is short). There is an optional side pool awarded winner-take-all to the player involved in it who advances the furthest. The cost to enter that pool is $20. There is no rake on either pool.
Main event matches are played to seven points and employ both the doubling cube and Crawford Rule. The loser of each match flows to a lower bracket where matches are played to five points before 10:00 PM and three points thereafter (as a courtesy to our hosts). Each player is therefore assured two matches per event.
Tournaments usually occur on the first and third Tuesdays of each month at the Fox & Hound (map). Play begins at 6:30 PM, so please arrive a few minutes early to register. If you own a tournament-sized backgammon board, please bring it along.
